Water Pumping for Hydroponics
Plant roots are fed oxygen dissolved in the liquid as it passes through them, making this an effective alternative to growing with traditional soil. The root system is exposed directly to air so they can grow more efficiently and larger than other systems such as Traditional In-Ground Gardening.
One major problem that occurs while using hydroponic systems is that plants very quickly build up a layer of calcium on their leaves known as ‘white dust’ or ‘lime wash’ which can block out sunlight and also reduce the efficiency of photosynthesis. This can be combated by installing a water pump which will circulate the nutrient solution around the air and root system.
How to clean water pumps? how often do I have to clean out my hydroponic pumps from calcium buildup?
You may try the vinegar and hot water method, which works better than commercial cleaners. Put 1/2 cup of vinegar into the bucket, fill it up with hot water, let it sit for at least 10 minutes. How to Measure Water Pump CFM?
The best way to measure CFM (Cubic Feet Per Minute) is by using a clamp style anemometer that can be purchased at most hydroponic stores .
Place your water pump in a bucket of water and use the stop watch feature on your cell phone or digital clock to start timing when you plug in the pump, then time how long it takes for one gallon of water to pass through the system. If you need help remember that 1″ = 25 cm so if you need draw down 20cm (10″) from the top of your reservoir, each litre capacity will add 1000ml’s of water (1000mls x 9.45=102 .7 L) from each litre capacity of water drawn down add 1500ml’s to your initial results.
How often to pump water through hydroponic system?
It depends on the hydroponic system that you have. The best way to add nutrient solution is by flooding the media with a solution and waiting for it to drain out before doing it again. With DWC, NFT, Aeroponics systems, add nutrient solution daily. This is because they have a lot more water than soil. In-ground gardening can take up to 10 days or so between watering as there is less water than soil volume.
How to choose the right water pump for your hydroponic system?
There are a few things to consider when choosing the right pump for your hydroponic system. The first thing you need to do is work out how much water your hydroponic system will require per day, then you need to look at what type of pump you will be using. GPH (gallons per hour) should be the number one consideration when choosing a pump.
Some examples may help: If you have plants that require around 2 gallons of water per day in an NFT or DWC system then you could use a 315 gph pump. In this situation it is best to run multiple smaller pumps than 1 larger one as they can keep the nutrient solution moving more effectively through the media, ensuring that plants get enough oxygen and nutrients.
If you have many plants that require a lot of water per day, such as fruiting and flowering plants then you will need to run larger pumps as larger volumes are required for them however if you purchased a pump that was too powerful this may cause nutrient lock out because the solution drains out of your pots faster than it can be replaced (depending on how well they are sealed). By using smaller pumps more frequently it is possible to prevent this from occurring while still supplying enough oxygen and nutrients to the root system.
How Much Water Does A Hydroponic System Use?
This depends entirely on what type of system you are using. It doesn’t take much water to fill reservoirs or flood trays but when growing in containers we recommend mixing a larger batch of nutrient solution in a large bin or bucket and divide it into smaller containers, this will save on the amount of time you have to fill up your reservoir which can take up quite a bit of time.
This may seem like common sense but when you’re busy thinking about what needs doing, little things like that can be easily overlooked. The best thing to do is work out how much water your plants require each day then divide that number by say 8 if you are filling all of those containers daily because they are relatively small volumes and it could be an eye-opener as to just how much water you need ready for the next days feeding!
How to set timer water recirculation pump?
To set the timer on a recirculation pump, firstly you will need to choose how long you want the pump to run for. Then count off that amount of time in 15-30 minute increments.
Now we can start setting the timer with an example: If I am using my NFT system and it takes 2 minutes to fill the buffer tank at each interval(let’s say 30 intervals) then it would take 60 minutes to drain out completely so I would only put one interval on for 1/2 hour as this is less than half of our available time (60mins).
If I wanted 2 hours between intervals, I would put 30 Intervals on for 1 hour each. Another thing concerning timing is if you feeding more than one system then you will need to do a little math or have someone help you figure out how much nutrient solution is going to be used up before the next intervals.
For my example, I would do 60 minutes x 1/2 tank = 30 mins. This means that there is no point in timing any extras as it would just be more water being pumped through my pipes than necessary and this can cause blockages if too much solution builds up in your manifold or pipework.
If I had two tanks then I would time the interval for 48 minutes (60 minutes – 2 Intervals) because my second tank only takes 24 hours to drain which is half of our 72-minute timer cycle.
