How to Choose the best grow tent Heater?
When choosing a heater there are 4 basic types:
Ceramic Cartridge Heaters – these emit warm air via radiation, so they work well, but take up more space than other options. These usually come with built-in fans, which is nice as it means no additional electrical parts are required ( also means more noise). This is the most popular option in my opinion.
Infrared Heaters – these emit infrared light, usually it is just a single strip that you install on top of your canopy, or along the wall behind your plants. The reason these are not very popular is that they can cause problems with your plants if there isn’t enough ventilation in your grow area since they generate heat by causing an electrical reaction between the elements inside. They also require additional parts like fans to get rid of any excess heat produced.
Heat mats – These are great for smaller grows where less heat will be required, but once again they require extra equipment to get rid of any superfluous heat build-up. Not nearly as problematic as infrared lights though!
Hotplate Heaters – I would only recommend these if you are looking for an industrial grow tent heater, they can get very expensive and require constant attention to ensure the temperature is correct. They also do not distribute heat evenly (like all heating pads) which could cause some problem areas in your plants.
This guide will be focusing on the first type of heater, ceramic cartridge heaters with built-in fans.
How much wattage does my Grow Tent Heater need?
The wattage required by each individual room varies greatly depending on how large it is, what’s in it (for example plants take up space), insulation materials present (foil or bubble wrap), ventilation methods, size of your lights, etc…Let us assume that you want the average to grow room to be around 80°F and that you do not use fans in your grow space.
I would go with a heater anywhere between 600-1,500 watts for most grows, if you have more plants than this I would recommend going closer to the 1,500 watts side of things. If you need to heat up a very large area (upwards of 10’x10′) and don’t want to risk using multiple heaters (which we will talk about below) then I would recommend going with at least 2,000-3, 000 watts.
What wattage is right for me?
If you don’t know how many watts your grow tent heater should be, it may be helpful to look into exactly how many watts each part of your grows tent needs. Your bulbs should be listed on the original box they came with, if not here is a quick breakdown of common wattages used in most indoor grows :
250w = ~20-25 sq ft coverage
400w = ~ 30-40 sq ft
600w = ~ 50-60 sq ft
900w = ~ 80-90 sq ft
Note: the above are only estimates!
Lights – most people use either HPS or MH lamps for growing weed indoors. These ought to be thought of as miniature heaters that need to be kept separate from your main grow room heater(s). They will drive up the temperature in an enclosed space even more than just the sheer wattage output, so keep this in mind when powering on/ off your lights.
Some of the newer LED grow lights are not as hot or power-hungry as older models, but they still need their own separate space. If you have an LED light installed inside of a bigger area, it will cause some issues because the extra heat produced by the light may be absorbed by plants surrounding it. Therefore I would recommend getting a heater that is at least 50 watts higher than what you expect to need for your main lamps.
I am going with 2x 400-watt HPS lamps, therefore I should get at least a 1,200-watt ceramic cartridge heater (keep in mind that fans can take up additional space).
As you can see, there are many great choices for growing tent heaters. Each has its own set of advantages and disadvantages depending on what your needs may be.
Choosing the best grow tent heater is all about choosing the right features that will work well in your growing environment to help you get just the right airflow. The list above should help you choose the best grow room heater!

Should i put a heater in my grow tent?
Heaters are a great accessory for any grow tent, but you should always – read that again always – check the temperature before using one. If your grow room will consistently stay above 77 degrees Fahrenheit (or 25 degrees Celsius), then you won’t need a heater. However, if it is cooler than that, then you may want to consider getting one.
How big of a heater do i need grow tent 4×4?
Most growers use an average temperature between 78-82 degrees Fahrenheit, during vegetative growth or before flowering when energy costs are highest.
A small 1000+ watt heater is enough for this.
The heater headed up my basement in 20 minutes!
